Atiku Short Biography

Atiku Abubakar was Nigeria’s vice president throughout Olusegun Obasanjo’s democratic reign from May 1999 to May 2007. His vice presidency did bring him prominence, but he was one of Nigeria’s leading politicians before and after.

Atiku Abubakar was born to a Fulani farmer’s father and a trader’s mother in Gongola province (now Adamawa state) on November 25, 1946. His father was opposed to Western education, but he had to study because of the compulsory education legislation that was then in effect.

His father passed away at the age of 11, and his mother died at the age of 38. He was the only child, and he said he needed to expand his family after marrying his second wife because he didn’t want his kids to experience the same isolation fate as a boy.

Atiku began his career as a customs officer in the real estate business during his early days. He applied for a N31,000 loan in 1974 to build his first house in Yola, which he put up for rent. He acquired another plot from the rent revenue and built a second house. He proceeded this way, building a large property portfolio in Yola.

He turned to agriculture in 1981 and purchased 2,500 hectares of land near Yola to establish a farm for maize and cotton. The company came down in tough times and closed in 1986.
He then went on to trade, buy and sell flour, rice, and sugar truckloads.

He had a great business connection with the Dangote Group, and later he had a good business relationship with the man himself. When he was a customs officer at the Apapa Ports, his most important business move came happened.

Gabrielle Volpi, an Italian businessman in Nigeria, approached him to set up the Ports logistics company Nigeria Container Services (NICOTES).

NICOTES will continue to provide Atiku with tremendous wealth. NICOTES was later rebranded as INTELS and continued to play a significant part in the US government’s Vice President’s accusations of money laundering levied against Atiku.

The business empire of Atiku also contains a soda manufacturing plant in Yola as well as a feed factory for livestock.

Atiku founded his American University of Nigeria (AUN) in 2005, the first Sub-Saharan African-style university to be established. It was established in Yola, Adamawa’s capital. Google has granted AUN special recognition.
