The compilation was launched successfully in London, New York and Lagos, and the following year was succeeded by an 8-country tour, Cuppy Takes Africa, now a TV show on FOX.

Jumpstarting her US invasion in 2015 with an internship at Roc Nation, she performed at SXSW Festival and starred as the resident DJ on MTV’s ‘Uncommon Sense’ Show; all whilst attaining a Masters in Music at New York University.

DJ CUPPY SPOKE ABOUT HER CAREER AND FATHER IN AN INTERVIEW:

Would you have been this successful without your father?

That is a very nice question. It is very good to know that people could have the same platform but some are big while others are small. I always say thanks to education, which, seems to be an open door for everybody. But if you are not good and if you are not bad as an individual all you need to do is to keep on going and doing what you can. I would not say that I am an exemption but I have been doing this for a while now and I became bigger than I was in terms of this DJ work because I do it often. I think practice makes perfect.

DJ CUPPY & HER SISTER TEMI OTEDOLA

Why did you choose to be in this career instead of many other jobs out there?

I think it is very important to follow your heart, choose the job that you like to do and you will never waste a day in your life. It is about personal fulfillment and with my dad I think I told him this is what I want and he told me that if I want to be a DJ, I have to be the best of it.

Was he not disappointed when you told him you wanted to be a DJ?

No, he was not. I would like to use this medium to advise every Nigerian that there is need for us to support our children in their careers. My dad was one of the first people to say to me, “Cuppy, I know you can do it but you must be the best”. He is also my biggest critic as well and it is fantastic having that support and challenge. He is giving me that competitive drive; he made me not to get comfortable with my brand and my skill. So I think my dad is someone who is actually bigger than what people think. Cuppy brand is doing very well because of him.

What would you say inspired this African tour in eight countries?

This tour was inspired when I looked at my environment and potential. When I said I wanted to do eight countries in four weeks, a lot of people looked at me like I was crazy. You know the people that I had in mind that I actually wanted to work with said they were not really going to do this tour in four weeks. But after much considerations and everything and also with a great team and support from my brand, we are able to put the tour together.
We also have challenges ahead but we are going to move on.

Did your father influence you?
Thank you for that question, I think it is wise to know that in April I was appointed one of the tourism ambassadors. A lot of people asked me how the thing came about. I would say it was because I did a song titled, “I love my country,” which was a great song, and the Minister of Tourism listened to it and liked the song. He thought it was a great way of inspiring the youths in Nigeria through song. So being a tourism ambassador in this country, I am looking at my potential role in tourism because the inauguration committee thought it would be great having someone that would represent Nigeria. I am a representative of the new Nigeria. A female DJ so unique and I think I am honoured by a presidential inauguration. I am also looking forward to working as well.

I only snub people I don’t know – Nollywood Actress Chioma Akpotha

Nollywood actress, Chioma Akpotha, has revealed that attending a girls’ only secondary school affected her relationship with men.

Speaking with Sunday Scoop, the actress admitted that a lot of people think she had an attitude problem. She said, “I am aware that people think I am a snob, but I am actually a shy person. My job demands that I should abandon who I am. It used to be even worse for me because I went to a single-sex school; so, relating to guys was difficult for me.

However, I am adjusting now because of acting.” According to Akpotha, she tries as much as possible to protect herself and that gives people the impression that she is a snob. “When you meet me newly, the first impression you get is that I am cold. But I am only trying to protect myself from people I don’t know. “If I am in a room and I know everyone there, I will be very comfortable and playful. But if I don’t know anyone, I will be cold. I am not trying to blow my trumpet; I am just saying that I need to know you to be comfortable with you,” she said.

Despite starting acting at the age of 17, she claimed that she did not indulge in drinking or smoking like some of her peers. She stated, “The way my mother raised us, especially as her first daughter, there was no way I would have lived a wayward life. My late mother would have been a solider if she didn’t have a job. In Igboland, they pay so much attention to the first daughter because she must be an example to the younger ones. Also, I am allergic to smoke and many other things. I act stupidly whenever I am high, which is not good for someone like me in public because I like to conduct myself well. I had friends who questioned why I did not smoke or drink but if you know who you are, you wouldn’t succumb to peer pressure.

However, I am not saying the fact that I don’t smoke or drink makes me an extraordinary being.

Donald McKinley Glover is an American actor as well as writer, producer, director, comedian, rapper, singer, and songwriter. He is best known by his stage name Childish Gambino and as a disc jockey, he performs under the name mcDJ.

Donald Glover Early Life

He was born on September 25, 1983, at Edwards Air Force Base, California. He is the son of Beverly, a daycare center and Donald Glover, a postal worker. His parents also served as foster parents for 14 years. Glover grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness. Glover has two siblings, Bee Glover and Stephen, who also works with him as a writer for Atlanta.

Donald Glover grew up in a religious household in Georgia. A creative and energetic kid, he was adept at a wide range of performing arts. His immediate success as a writer and actor would ironically plague Childish Gambino, as it drew his focus away from music, which for most of Donald’s creative life, was just a side project.

He attended DeKalb School of the Arts,  was voted “Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons” in his high school yearbook. Glover graduated from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts with a degree in dramatic writing in 2006.

Career: Acting, Mixtape

After his graduation, in 2006, he was hired as a writer for the TV show ’30 Rock,’ where he also occasionally appeared as an actor. Three years later he left that job to move to Los Angeles and was soon cast on the sitcom Community and left the show during the fifth season. He released his first mixtape, “Sick Boi” in 2008, using a name, Childish Gambino, he had been given by an online Wu-Tang Clan name generator.

Glover also became a member of the sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy, having appeared in their sketches on YouTube since 2006, along with Dominic Dierkes, Meggie McFadden, DC Pierson, and Dan Eckman. The group wrote and starred in a feature-length film, Mystery Team, released in theatres in 2009.

In 2015, Glover has also appeared as supporting roles in films including, The Lazarus Effect, Magic Mike XXL, and The Martian.

His next mixtape “Poindexter” was released on September 19, 2009. At the same day, “Community” premiered on NBC. While his brainy, sometimes goofy rapping style was established by these two mixtapes, his next efforts sought to expand his reach and touch on more serious subjects.

I AM JUST A RAPPER and I AM JUST A RAPPER 2 were released in quick succession at the beginning of 2010. Then after a few months later, he released Culdesac, a mixtape that showed off his soulful singing style. All the while he was still starring on Community, launching a successful stand-up comedy career, and making electronic music under the name mcDJ. To this point, all his music had been self-released, but that changed when he was signed to Glassnote Records in 2011.

First official Album “Camp”

His first official album “Camp” was issued that same year and has sold more than 240,000 copies. Glover launched a tour that lasted into 2012, then released another mixtape “Royalty” denoting his new status as a more serious rapper and featuring a range of musicians including Beck, ScHoolboy Q, and Das Racist’s Heems.

Along with guesting on tracks by Kilo Kish, Chance the Rapper, Young Dro, and Kenna, his next move was to reduce his commitment to Community in order to focus more on his music and other projects, most notably a production deal with the TBS network. He left the show for good in 2013.

Released his second album, “Because the Internet”

In 2013, he released his second album, “Because the Internet” and with U.S. sales of 377,000 copies. The record featured appearances by Chance the Rapper, Jhené Aiko, and Azealia Banks, and scored Childish Gambino a Top Ten debut chart placement, a gold record, and a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

Glover kept up the same determined pace he always had, and in 2015 released a new mixtape, STN MTN, and EP, Kauai, both of which showed him expanding his sound, with the latter featuring more singing than before. His next big project was creating and starring in Atlanta, a well-received comedic drama set in the titular city. It debuted in September of 2016 and was an instant commercial success.Around this same time, Glover began dropping hints about a new album, played a festival in California where he played many new songs.

Debut single, “Me and Your Mama”

On November 2016, he  debuted the first single, “Me and Your Mama.” It was a new sound cooked up by Glover and longtime producer Ludwig Göransson, based on deeply weird late-’60s and early-’70s psychedelic funk and soul like Sly & the Family Stone and Funkadelic.

“Awaken, My Love!”, which came out in December of 2016, featured Glover forgoing his trademark rap style completely and instead, stretching his vocal range in a variety of styles. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi. Along with guesting on tracks by Kilo Kish, Chance the Rapper, Young Dro, and Kenna, his next move was to reduce his commitment to Community in order to focus more on his music and other projects, most notably a production deal with the TBS network.

It debuted in September of 2016 and was an instant commercial success.

On 18 September 2017, Donald Glover won two Emmys for his work on “Atlanta”. One for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series, and one for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. In both cases, his win was a breakthrough, which he made history as the first black person to win an Emmy for directing for a comedy.

He thanked his parents, who he brought with him, his brother, FX, and his best friend Hiro Murai who he says taught him everything about directing.

Personal Life: Baby Son, Partner, Net Worth, Wife

Glover has one child, who was born in 2016. During his Golden Globe acceptance speech in January 2017, Glover revealed the child was a boy. It turns out that he is so private, he has not revealed her named publicly.

There isn’t much known about Glover’s girlfriend just yet, but with the report that the two are now raising a child together, in the fact that the two were spotted together in Hawaii, according to a report by US Weekly. At the time, Glover’s girlfriend looked to be very pregnant, and, if the report that she gave birth in January is correct, she definitely was.

Gambino’s ‘Camp’ album earned roughly $250,000 in sales in 2011, and the ‘Because the Internet’ album brought in $330,000 in 2013, the latest figures available. Donald Glover, through his acting and music career (as Childish Gambino), has a net worth estimated at $4.5 million.
