French President Emmanuel Macron discusses why he’s visiting Fela Kuti’s New Afrika Shrine

The French President Emmanuel Macron is currently visiting the Afrika Shrine tonight for the Celebrate African Culture event.

Macron, before the event, visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, where, according to The Cable, he spoke to the press about why he’s visiting the shrine.

First, because I wanted to find a good occasion to come back there. I know the place and I have some memories, I have to confess at a time that there was no president around, I hope I will not spoil the party,” he said.

First, I think that is such an iconic place for a lot of African people and African culture. And I think very often when you speak of the African culture in Europe, those who are successful in Europe and in France, which is different most of the times are not dramatically very famous in Nigeria or in Africa. And there is a bias because you know people are absolutely not the same.

I mean Fela, Femi, Seun Kuti are obviously very famous in France and Europe, I mean they are big successes but the Shrine is a cultural hub, an iconic hub and it is very important for me first on a personal level, and that is why I want to say with a lot of humility that I recognize the importance of this place, I recognize the place of culture in this current environment.

Nkem Ndem’s Exciting Trip to Maputo with Google- Part One(1)

Sun-kissed days, sand between my toes, pulsating music, laughter, fresh coconut water, grilled fish and peri-peri prawns, ocean waves, the cold sea breeze…these are the memories I will always have of Maputo.

Aerial view of Maputo city

The morning I received the e-mail detailing the #MaputowithGoogle trip, I remember I was lying at the back of a taxi heading to Lekki Phase 1.  I sat up straight and screamed out loud.

“I am going to Maputo”.

I have always had this dream of visiting every city in Africa, but the four cities I have visited so far (thanks to budgeting issues) have been within West Africa.  Learning that I would be going to Maputo on a 2-day all-expense tour, put together by Google for influencers and journalists from across Africa (Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya) to help them see how useful Google can be as a holiday assistant was positively overwhelming. Maputo, one of Africa’s most picturesque countries, along the coast of the Indian Ocean, would mark my first foray in Sub-Saharan Africa.

As I always do before visiting any new country or city, I engaged the Google app on my mobile phone researching the city. There were quite a number of negative articles referring to Mozambique as one of the poorest countries in the world with flaws such as a lack of infrastructure, police corruption and the safety concerns of the average developing nation; but I took solace in the fact that Lonely Planet referred to Mozambique as “…easily one of Africa’s most attractive capitals.”

The flight from Lagos to Johannesburg, where we would lay over before boarding another flight to Maputo, was scheduled for 10pm but I arrived the airport at 5pm. Thanks to the Google Maps app, I kept tabs on traffic patterns between Lekki area and the international Airport; and based on these studies, I knew I had to get to the airport extra early.

As I stood in the airport waiting, I couldn’t help the feelings of anxiety. I was travelling with five other journalists/influencers who already knew each other: Tosin Ajibade a.k.a OloriSupergal who I have always admired, Sisi Yemmiewhose fantastic YouTube channel I was already following, Anderson a.k.a LazyWrita whose blog I followed from time to time, Olufemi Oguntamu a.k.a Penzaar of Penzaarville and Handle It Africa, and Ozi Okoli, an award-winning producer/presenter at TVC. Being an introvert, would I be able to blend it? Would they be nice to me? And vice versa.

Just arriving the airport and ready to roll

Anderson and Penzaar were the first to arrive, and in less than five minutes, we were taking pictures and laughing at each other’s jokes. It was as though I already knew them. Next was Sisi Yemmie and Tosin, then Ozi. After we secured our boarding passes and went through immigration, we stopped to watch the football match between Nigeria and Argentina. We were determined to finish the match before boarding…and we had really hoped for a victorous game, but alas! Nigeria lost the match to Argentina and we left the country nursing bleeding hearts.

Aboard South African Airways enroute Johannesburg

My Google Trips app offered numerous suggestions on what we could do in the city, but we couldn’t do  much with the information as we did not have the South Africa visas, and going into the city would be risking deportation. Also, it was too cold.

It was winter in Johannesburg and somehow, none of us had planned for it. The cold was so bad that even the hot cups of coffee were no help. Penzaar and I strolled around the entire airport until it was about 20 minutes to boarding. We were delighted to hear our flight announced. We were happy to leave.

Ozi, Penzaar and I  at the Joburg airport waiting to board

As fortune would have it, we arrived Maputo 15 minutes early.

As the plane hovered over the city in preparation to land, I looked out the window and beneath the plane’s belly was a jigsaw of closely clustered shacks and lush trees. The layout was mostly the same pattern as other African cities I had visited. We exited the plane immediately after touch-down and headed towards immigration. The exotic sounds of Portuguese filled the air around, but I wasn’t fazed as I had already downloaded the Portuguese file on my Google Translate app and was ready to tackle any linguistic challenge online or offline.

The Maputo Airport

The Maputo Mavalane International Airport was rather small, compared to the airport at Johannesburg. And while it was clean and organized, it was also old and in dire need of painting. Fortunately, we cleared immigration, and customs in no time. We paid $50 each for a 30-day visa and  show proof of accommodation in the country a(Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence, Maputo)

Once outside, members of the Google Africa team: Mr. T and Mich were waiting.

The 6 of us with Mich from Google Africa

The skies were hazy, but blue. There was a hint of a breeze and I inhaled the tropical, thick, humid Maputo air. I was excited again.

As we drove out of the Maputo airport, the vibrant sounds of the street echoed around us. There was a stretch of shanty towns/ bairros and local markets which sort of gave a Cotonou vibe. Just before the Independence Circle though, we saw a curved wall with bright red frescoes celebrating the revolution. The wall was designed by artist Malangatana Valente, who was also a freedom fighter and revered in all of Maputo.

As we approached the city, we saw an outline of modern buildings, like any other city in the developed world.

Aerial view of Radisson Blu Hotel and Residence

Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence, Maputo

The hotel, Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence, Maputo  was exquisite.  We checked into our rooms and had about foir hours to rest and have lunch before dinner.

I spent the first few minutes going through the welcome gifts from the Google Africa team, then took a bath and perused the hotel menu.

The set menu was a bit restricted and it was mostly a selection of sea food so I went to Google Maps to check the review on the hotel food. The popular recommendation was the prawns,  as apparently,  Maputo serves the best prawns in the continent. I went for Grilled Mozambican praws, homenade potato wedges and garden greens. It was super delicious.

Lunch at the hotel

I was able to catch a quick nap before I was roused by the notification from Google Calendar to get ready for the dinner at Zambia.

On our way to the restaurant, I met Susan, another Nigerian who had arrived a day before us. She was quite a ray of sunshine and we kind of bonded immediately.

The entrance at Zambi restaurant

Zambi is one of the best restaurants in the city.  Their menu offers a wide selection of mouth-watering dishes, from seafood to European cuisine and sushi and the amibiance is just divine. While the classy interior has a large indoor seating area, we opted for a long table outside.

Susan and I walking into ZAMBI for the dinner

Dinner time

The service was great. One of the waiters, named Pirish (which according to him means small plate) taught us some key words in Portueguese:  Thank You –  Obrigado/a (male/female),  You’re welcome –  De nada,  Hello-  Olá , Goodbye – Adeus, and   Please- Por Favor. His English was not very good so we were able to communicate with him using the voice function of the Google translate app.

He further entertained us by performing Several songs by Nigerian music artiste, Davido.  According to him, Davido was a huge favourite in Maputo.

We were offered a 3-course meal. I started off with Mojito and crispy prawns, then had “The catch of the day” (which turned out to be a red snapper) paired with buttery potatoes and steamed veggies as entrée and a moist chocolate cake and Amarula ice cream for dessert.

The menu was written in Porteguese and English. However, to make it fun we were asked to try and use the Google translator app to translate the Porteguese texts in the menu. To achieve the task, we had to use the camera function of the app and it actually worked!

Using Google Translate to decode the menu

The dinner was quite an exciting event, as it offered us the chance to meet  and socialize with the other influencers from Kenya and South Africa before Day one.

Nigeria’s foremost telecommunications company, Globacom, has sent the third batch of lucky subscribers to Russia under its ongoing Glo GO RUSSIA promo.

The latest batch of the subscribers were five, namely, Aseruoma Glory Aworiwo from Delta State, Ajayi Odunayo Felix from Oyo State, Ojokojo Ernest Paul from Delta State, Izuchukwu Kizito Alih from Enugu State and Oladele Oluseyi Adetokunbo from Osun State.

The development brings the total number of lucky subscribers who have benefitted from the promo to 17. A total of 22 lucky winners are expected to be flown to and back from Russia, with all incidental cost including feeding taken care of by Globacom.

According to Globacom in a press statement, 12 subscribers had been to and returned from Russia after visits to different monuments, tourist attractions and historical sites where they were treated to delightful experiences in Russia.

BATCH THREE WINNERS: Ojokojo Ernest Paul from Delta State, Aseruoma Glory Aworiwo also from Delta State, Ajayi Odunayo Felix from Oyo State, Oladele Oluseyi Adetokunbo from Osun State and  Izuchukwu Kizito Alih from Enugu State, all winners in the Glo GO RUSSIA promo during their sent forth by Globacom in Lagos on Saturday.

The latest winners were first treated to a reception at the head office of the company on Victoria Island before they were ferried to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport to catch their Emirates flight to Russia.

A music producer, Izuchuwu Kizito Alih, thanked Globacom for the opportunity of a lifetime. “Glo is the only network in my village” he declared, adding, “Everybody in my family uses Glo. I have always known that Glo is the best.”

Another winner, Aseruoma, Glory Aworiwo, a 26-year old graduate of Business from Cardiff Metropolitan University said the trip provided some succor for her as she lost her brother recently. “I urge all Glo subscribers not to give up on Glo because they will benefit like me one day,” she said.

Oluseyi Adetokunbo, an Analyst in a Microfinance Bank said, his colleagues told him it was a scam when he first told them he was called by Globacom that he won a trip to Russia. “Now I can confirm to them that it is real”, he said.

Globacom used the opportunity of the send forth ceremony to also formally the first and second batches of winners who recently returned from Russia. According to one of the Batch 1 winners, Joseph Oladunjoye, “Globacom treated us like kings. It was a wow experience, the food was wow, the hotel accommodation was wow, the treatment was wow. Thanks Glo”, he enthused.

To be part of the promo, all a subscriber needs to do was to use N3, 000 on Voice calls or a minimum of N5, 000 on Voice and Data. Incremental usage of N500 over N3000 for Voice or N5, 000 for Voice and Data attracts an extra entry to the draw. In essence, the more the airtime used by subscribers, the higher the chances of winning.

Globacom urged subscribers who want to be part of the promo to send GO to 240 on the Glo network.

Comedian and TV host Teju Babyface and his wife, Tobi Banjoko-Oyelakin, held the dedication for their twins over the weekend with a service at DayStar Church and a party at an event center after.

The event was attended by several comedians including Basketmouth, Julius Agwu, Yaw, MC Abbey, Tee-A, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st and many more.

Talking about the dedication, Teju Babyface says:

Yesterday we dedicated our twin boy and girl to God in the presence of family and friends at Daystar Christian Center @daystarng. It was more than just a traditional ceremony for us and this is more than just a vanity or ego driven post. We have known what it is to desire a good thing that other people seem to get so easily and not have it. We have also known what it is for God to hold and comfort you while you wait on Him. The crux of this post is that there is a God who rules in and over the affairs of men and even though it will feel like it sometimes, he neither sleeps nor slumbers. Nor goes on vacation for that matter. He hasn’t forgotten you whatever your longing and good desire and I promise you that He will come through at the right time to show you off to the world. Hold on! For day cometh quickly. @tobibanjokooyelakin #BabaIbeji#mamaibeji #BabaTwins #mamatwins#AwesomeGod #GratefulParents.

See The Roofless Aircraft With 96 Passengers That Landed Safely After Explosion in The sky

On April 28, 1988, an Aloha Airline’s Boeing 737-297 flying between Hilo and Honolulu in Hawaii suffered an extensive damage with one-third of its roof blown off due to metal fatigue and corrosion.

As the Aloha Airline’s Flight 243 suddenly lost altitude, passengers began singing hymns and bracing for a crash. Thirteen minutes after the explosion, the pilot landed the 19 year old aging aircraft safely at Kahului Airport on Maui.

See the illustration and the actual aircraft (@1.57 mins) moments after landing

VIDEO:

During the explosion, 58 year-old flight attendant Clarabelle Lansing was ejected from the airplane and was never found . About 65 passengers out of 89 and crew were injured.

An aerospace engineer who was aboard the plane with his wife said
“The stewardess had just said, ‘Would you like one more drink? She was handing my wife a glass when suddenly she disappeared”

Most of the survivors congratulated the Pilot Robert Schornstheimer for his seemingly miraculous landing.
One of them said :
“I give credit to the pilot,”
“He brought that plane down so smoothly. It was just like riding in a Cadillac.”

It was a miraculous fit to land the aging aircraft with passengers exposed to open sky and high winds at an altitude of over 24,000 feet over the Pacific because, in theory , a Boeing 737 with nearly one-third of its roof blown off should not be able to fly.

A former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, who is now a bona fide staff of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has assumed duty as a students facilitator at the institution’s Abeokuta Study Centre in Ogun State.

Earlier today, the 81-year-old ex-president met with two final-year undergraduate students of Christian Theology, assigned to him by the university for supervision.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Abdalla Adamu, had soon after the former president’s graduation with PhD in January, appointed him as a facilitator.

A facilitator is a part-time academic coordinator for students in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system which open universities operate.

Mr Obasanjo, the first PhD graduate of the university, received his certificate in Christian Theology during NOUN’s 7th Convocation ceremony earlier this year in Abuja.

24-hour Medical Service To Be Provided In NYSC Camps

Plans are underway to establish 24-hour medical facilities in all permanent orientation camps for persons, participating the mandatory one year national youth service corps, NYSC, scheme in Nigeria.

The House of Representatives which gave the indication during plenary on Wednesday has therefore mandated its committee on healthcare services and youth development to liaise with both the ministry of health and authorities of the NYSC.

The reported cases of death of corp members in the NYSC scheme due to inadequate health facility has been sources of worry to government and other concerned individuals.

Medical facilities available within the NYSC orientation camps are known to have inadequate or no medical personnel to provide services.

More worrisome is the lack of medical facilities to contain ailments.

The lawmakers therefore want this anomaly to be urgently addressed. They also want the provision of 24-hour standby ambulance services in all permanent orientation camps across the country to help with emergency cases.

In another motion, the house mandated its committee on interior to investigate the release of the sum of 2.8 billion naira appropriated for the federal fire service in the two thousand and eleven budget.

Garki Hospital Speaks On Female Corper Linda Nkechi Shot By Police, Reveals how She died, Threaten To Sue Blogs

Garki Hospital where the Female Corper Linda Nkechi was rushed to after been shot by Police has released a statement on the matter, and the false reports that they denied her medical attention, read below!

The purported complicity of Garki Hospital Abuja in denying Miss Igwetu treatment and allowing her to bleed to death while asking for a police report is false and malicious.

“Garki Hospital Abuja does not demand for Police report before attending to Trauma Patients at her Accident and Emergency department.

“Garki Hospital does not insist on payment before stabilising trauma patients. It is a tradition that we do not compromise”.

Giving the hospital’s account of the sad incident, the statement said “Miss Igwetu was brought to our hospital at about 3.05 a.m. on July 4 in a very precarious condition. The doctors on duty at the Accident and Emergency including the consultant surgeon on call battled to save her life by providing care including blood transfusions and limited surgery.

“This was done even before any form of payment could be made. Unfortunately, despite all efforts to save her life, she did not make it.”

The hospital also demanded the immediate rebuttal of all reports of allegations that the hospital denied the deceased treatment from all mainstream and social media.

It further demanded a published apology within 48 hours from media platforms that published the allegations.

“Failure to publish the required rebuttals and apology would compel Garki Hospital to take legal actions against such media houses and blogs including their promoters.

“We also encourage the media to always take a step further by confirming the information they are fed with before broadcasting it to the general public,” the statement said.

Garki Hospital also sympathised with the family of the deceased, the NYSC and Nigeria as a whole on the loss of Ms Igwetu and reassured all Nigerians of the hospital’s commitment to saving lives.

The hospital declined to state the cause of death, saying this can only be determined by a postmortem examination.

Nkechi Igwetu was heading to a party early Wednesday morning with her male friends when officers opened fire at the vehicle they were riding in, leaving her critically wounded.
