The June 12 election is considered one of the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. It is believed to have been won by late Moshood Abiola and his running mate Babagana Kingibe. The election was annulled before final results were officially announced. Mr Abiola was eventually jailed by the Sani Abacha military dictatorship for seeking to actualise his mandate. He died in prison in 1998.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday decided to honour Mr Abiola by declaring June 12 as Nigeria’s new Democracy Day. It was formally May 29. The president also declared that Mr Abiola would be given Nigeria’s highest national honour, GCFR, while Mr Kingibe would be given the second highest, GCON.

Coming under order 42 and 52, Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti-PDP), re-opened the issue to allow contributions. While commending Mr Buhari for the move, she wants him to do more in legalising the gesture

“For once, I want to thank the President of Nigeria. I want to say he has done well. This is one time that the President has given a thought to what (Moshood) Abiola and his family went through to fight for this democracy that we enjoy today.

“Going further, there are issues to be addressed so that we can be confident that this is not a Greek gift.”

She prayed the Independent National Electoral Commission to announce the result of the June 12, 1983 election officially, grant entitlements to the winners, recognise Babagana Kingibe as a former vice president and the executive declare June 12 a public holiday.

Mr Kingibe was running mate to Mr Abiola in the June 12, 1993 election. Mr Buhari on Wednesday announced that Mr Abiola would be conferred with Nigeria’s highest national honour, GCFR, while Mr Kingibe would be conferred with the second highest honour, GCON.

Below is a picture of President Ibrahim Babangida and Dr Nelson Mandela on the steps of State House Marina. Hanging from Dr Mandela’s neck is his GCFR medal. The picture is from Dan Agbese’s book, “Ibrahim Babangida The Military, Politics and Power in Nigeria” (Adonis and Abbey Publishers, London, 2012).

Meet Running Mate Of Late MKO Abiola For JUNE12 Elections Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe. Baba Gana Kingibe was Born on June 25, 1945 in Maiduguri, Borno State. He was named after his father’s best friend, Abubakar, a bricklayer who had a great influence on his life.

Background

Kingibe, Baba Gana was born on June 26, 1945 in Nigeria.

Education

Attended, University Sussex.

Career

Head of features and current affairs Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria. Member National Party of Nigeria. Member foreign service Ministry External Affairs, Lagos, since 1972.

Senior counsellor, head policy desk Nigerian High Commission, London. Ambassador to Greece, high commissioner for Cyprus Government of Nigeria, 1981-1986. Director general and secretary Constituent Assembly, 1988.

Director Organization People’s Front of Nigeria. National chairman Social Democratic Party, 1990. Former minister foreign affairs Government of Nigeria, Abuja, minister internal affairs, 1995-1997, minister of power and steel, since 1997. Lecturer international relations, 1969-1971.

He acquired the name Baba Gana (literally means little father in Kanuri) because those who respected his namesake, could not call him Abubakar. His father, a onetime cobbler, later became a native authority pay clerk during the colonial era.

The politicking between Borno Youth Movement (BYM) and Northern People’s Congress (NPC) spearheaded by Sir Kashim Ibrahim and Ibrahim Imam ignited the passion for politics and hatred for oppression in young Kingibe. The formation of BYM against the more popular and formidable NPC in the first republic led to skirmishes between the elites and the commoners in Borno.

Kingibe’s father and his guardian (Abubakar) were consumed in the bickering between BYM and NPC as they both lost their government jobs for supporting the opposition BYM. For the once, historically the Kanem-Borno Empire had been in persistent resistance to the wholesale domination of the Hausa-Fulani hegemony from the earliest century, the rampaging holy-war (Jihad) led by the legendary Uthman DanFodio met a huge resistance in Borno Empire.

The empire is blessed with great warriors like the legendary Mai Idris Alooma, Mai Ali Dunami, Muhammed al-Amin al-Kanemi etc. It is note-worthy and historical that this is the very first time since the advent of democracy from the first republic through the present dispensation that the Kanuris’ (Borno and Yobe states) would be in the same political party (All Progressives Congress, APC) with the Hausa-Fulani, and indeed in the same political party forming the central government.

Kingibe, in many respects is an archetypal Nigerian politician, he has combined politics with the ambivalence of a diplomat; a shrewd and calculating politician (like any politician) who always aimed for the highest prize. A politician with national security background, he speaks with confidence and verbal pyrotechnics of the academic. For Kingibe networking is a veritable tool in politics. No wonder he had a vast and massive following at the peak of his political power.

He is a master and always on top of his game. A quintessential and cerebral politician with the gift of the garb, his audience are held spell-bound during his campaigns. Tall and with a near-permanent smile that lights up his ebony black face, he cuts a picture of a man at peace with himself and at ease with the world. Urbane and gentle, Kingibe, son of a cobbler won government scholarship to attend Bishop Stortford College, England for his secondary school education.

He later took a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from University of Sussex, England, in 1968, and a postgraduate diploma course at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva.

He later trained at the British Broadcasting Corporation Television Training School, London and started out as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1969, but was later appointed Head, Current Affairs Department, Northern Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation. Being an ambitious young man, he left to join the Nigerian Foreign Service as External Affairs Officer. He was Counsellor, Nigeria High Commission, London; Principal Political Secretary, Supreme Military Headquarters, Lagos and later Principal Political Secretary, Executive Office of the President between 1976 and 1981.

In time, he became Permanent secretary in charge of special services in the Cabinet Office between 1981 and 1984. Kingibe was Nigeria’s Ambassador to Greece with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, and later, High Commissioner to Pakistan. A multi-dimensional personality and industrious with ability for multi-tasking, he has continued to offer himself for national service, as he served on the Justice Belgore Committee on the review of the Constitution and more recently as a member of the inauguration committee that midwifed the recent handover of government from former President Goodluck Jonathan to President Muhammadu Buhari. I must confess his is a service dedicated to fatherland and promotion of humanity.

In almost all his forty years of public service, Kingibe has never been linked to any allegations of corruption or self-enrichment.

He is one of the most decent and incorruptible Nigerians in public life. His humility is endearing even in spite of his attainment in life.

Fatherly, humane, accessible and generous to a fault. Kingibe is a study in silence and a very detailed personality. He has been a lecturer, broadcaster, an ambassador, permanent secretary, minister and secretary to the government of the federation, in all, his contribution to national development is commendable and will continue to be in our history.

A six-foot hammerhead shark spotted cruising Close To humans says marine experts

A six-foot hammerhead shark spotted cruising close to the shore is unlikely to be a threat to humans, marine experts said yesterday.

Inshore foray: A hammerhead shark approaches Shelly Bay Beach on Sunday

Choy Aming, who has researched the creatures for 12 years as part of the Bermuda Shark Project, said that it is not unusual for hammerheads to swim close to the beach.

He added sightings close to beaches were rare in Bermuda because of the low numbers of hammerheads, but that they were not considered aggressive.

Mr Aming was speaking after a young hammerhead was spotted off Shelly Bay at the weekend.

He said: “I wouldn’t panic but would err on the side of caution. Shelly Bay is a giant sand flat — you will see it coming.

“If you have a kid in the water, get them to shore and show them the shark.

“If the shark is startled, it will probably take off.”

Mr Aming added: “Outside of us chumming up the water and trying to get close over the years, I have never seen an aggressive move by a hammerhead.

“I think if you had kids in the bay swimming, it would probably cruise around and not bother them.

“There are tons of pictures of the Bahamas and Florida where there are people swimming with sharks.

Mr Aming said the shark could be the same one spotted at Flatts Inlet, St George’s and Admiralty Park in Pembroke in the past few weeks.

He was backed by Thaddeus Murdoch, chief scientist for the Bermuda Reef Ecosystem Assessment and Mapping Programme, who said the shark probably came close to shore to feed on marine life.

Dr Murdoch said: “When I heard about the shark turning up in Flatts Inlet, I would have thought it was a one-off but if it is the same juvenile, it appears to be settling in.

“We have a good population of turtles and eagle rays he could be feeding on. Both of them are protected and in pretty good shape, so he could have cruised into the reef and saw there were no competitors.

He added: “I’m sure the shark is looking for food. Shelly Bay has a school of red-eared herring, some mullet and the occasional eagle ray at this time of year. I’m sure it would rather avoid people. It is hard to say if it’s the same guy.”

Dr Murdoch agreed the best approach is not to panic if the shark is sighted.

He said: “I would calmly move out of the water if it returned but otherwise just keep a watch out.”

Mr Aming dismissed speculation that the shark was looking for a mate.

He said: “It is six feet long, a juvenile, so it’s not looking for a mate.”

Mr Aming added: “A few people have said why can’t you put it back out to sea?

“Just because it decides to come into Shelly Bay, it doesn’t mean it is out of its home. Even if it is in two feet of water in Shelly Bay, that is its home.

“Others have said maybe it’s injured. If it is the same shark swimming happily after three months that it highly unlikely.”

Jason Sukdeo, organiser of National Heroes Weekend, said the raft up scheduled for Shelly Bay on June 16 is to go ahead as normal.

Mr Sukdeo said two lifeguards and a St John Ambulance crew would be on duty, but emphasised they were recruited before the shark sighting.

The Royal Gazette contacted the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for information and advice but did not receive a response by press time.

The world cup kicked off today with a surprising score in the opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia. The host nation, Russia comprehensively crushed Saudi Arabia, 5-0 with Yuri Gazinsky scoring on a header 12 minutes in.

Russia’s second, third and fourth goals were all by substitutes: one by Artem Dzyuba and two by Denis Cheryshev. With time running out, Aleksandr Golovin got a fifth goal on a free kick, past a badly tired Saudi defense.

Russia thrash Saudi Arabia 5-0 in 2018 world cup opener

Saudi Arabia, a team whose players are virtually all based in their home league, played averagely but just couldn’t get one shot on target.

Even at halftime, the Saudi Arabian players looked tired, and it did not get better as Dzyuba scored on another header, then Cheryshev added his second in the 90th minute.

It was a great start for the host nation, who will still face Egypt and Uruguay in order to qualify for quarter finals.

Botswana, Cape Verde and Lesotho are the other countries.

Instead they opted for a joint bid of the United States of America (USA), Mexico and Canada, which eventually won the hosting rights.

The result was determined by more than 200 national soccer federations, who cast their ballots to cap FIFA’s annual Congress.

The 2026 tournament will feature an expanded field of 48 teams, an increase from the current 32.

It will also mark the first time in FIFA’s history, that a three-nation bid has been awarded the showpiece event.
